Sermon In Song

Is she a Rabbi or a cabaret singer? Rabbi Deborah Zecher is both. Come for Havdallah and her lively show called "Sermon in a Song" at Congregation Shalom in Chelmsford on Saturday evening, January 12 at 7:00 pm.

In this lively interactive program filled with wit, wonder, and wisdom, the audience matches songs with a list of sermon topics. Rabbi Stacy Offner of Temple Beth Tikvah in Madison, CT described "Sermon in a Song" and Rabbi Zecher's other programs as "absolutely exhilarating. She brings an energy into the room that is infectious. … Never had so much fun learning."

Debbie Zecher realized while growing up in the Pittsburgh area that she wanted to become a Rabbi. From 1992 to 2014 Rabbi Zecher was the spiritual leader at Hevreh of the Southern Berkshires in Great Barrington, MA, where she was greatly loved. Meanwhile, with a lifelong love of music, she created the show "Broadway Bible" in 1995 and started presenting it for groups around the Northeast. She was a member of the newly formed Adult Cabaret Workshop at the Berkshire Music School from 2002 through 2007. In 2006 she became a student at the National Cabaret Conference at Yale University. In March 2014 she was thrilled to participate in a concert in Berlin, Germany honoring the music of Jewish women composers. In the summer of 2017 she was one of six Cabaret Fellows at the Eugene O'Neill Cabaret Conference. In 2018 her debut cabaret show, "On Purpose," was very well received at Don't Tell Mama in New York City. Describing her career as a Rabbi and a cabaret singer, she summarized in the Berkshire Eagle, "The liturgy gives us the tools to express deep theological hopes, thoughts and dreams -- cabaret expresses all those in a secular way."
